WHETHER IT WAS DISPLACED BENEATH LITTLEROOT DUE TO DIMENSIONAL ENTANGLEMENT, BROUGHT BACK TO FUNCTIONING ORDER DUE TO DIALGA, OR BOTH, can not be determined. However, this kingdom made entirely out of intricate mechanisms is void of human life. Clockwork gears, iron tunnels, and curious domes make up this kingdom that continues to function like an animatronic music box.[break][break]

Mechanical Pokemon like Magearna, Volcanion and others present in the kingdom seem to be robotic, set to a rhythm or programming like an animatronic figure.[break][break]

Several clock towers loom above the entire kingdom, though their machinery seems to be in disrepair.

this was a weird double date.

the idea was to visit another wild rift besides the borders after having seemingly depleted it for any places of interest and a map of the immediate surrounding areas have already been made. there was also the fact that borders had an effect to their minds, that's why he's in his sygna suit right now while noah and matias compose their control group.

kyle has volunteered themselves to the mechanical kingdom, with an aim to scavenge around parts for their type:null whose recipes they've found. kyle already has one, but both matias and penelope seemed eager in having their own.

"should i even make a map?" he asks the group as they take their first steps. "this city seems like we'd eventually find one in a house or something."

in a video game setting, the first open building they encounter would have all the essentials, which is generally a save point and a place to heal. as he looks around, only clock towers seem to attract enough attention to make themselves points of interest.

after their last trip into the border, he wasn't sure if they'd ever agree to go on another expedition together again. he would've declined as well should they have chosen the border, but the mechanical kingdom seems okay.[break][break]

actually, it's a breath of fresh air as their minds feel at ease here; whole once more.[break][break]

Exploration felt maddening in the world left upside down and mechanical. The ticking of the looming towers and reaching archways were that of a fantasy novel.

Infernape kept to the councilwoman's side, swinging along the metal piping stuck between the walls. From bar to bar, the ape would swing, both scouting out their surroundings and aiding their own amusement.

"I think it's worth a try," she replied over to kyle lopez , smiling. "could help us navigate if we choose to come back."

Things were relatively timid between MATIAS SILPH and herself. Since their experience transversing the interdream zone, she'd found their situation quelled and relatively tamed. A way that'd felt natural; without constraints of committals, but still within the realms of comfort.

for a little while, noah is in his own little world. it's like a little vacation—though this destination is devoid of the chaotic din of tourists. just ticking. tocking. irregular staccato and the churning of gears against rust and time.[break][break]

noah picks up some bolts and gear pieces near the clock tower. like MATIAS SILPH, he sees that it is broken, the hands of its clock unmoving behind cracked glass.[break][break]

"hm?" noah stands up from his squat. his fingers find the bristly hairs on the back of his neck and scratch. "oh i've been good. y'know, just the usual. haha! just doing little ol' gym leader things."[break][break]

he smiles.[break][break]

"and you? as dangerous as these places are, i bet it's nice to be out of the office, right?" noah asks—the hot prickles of feeling out of place in the presence of someone so high in the political hierarchy jabbing into his armpits and neck. but the needles soon fade as the sound of heavy metal steps interrupts them.[break][break]

noah points toward a moving patrol of volcanion guards. their eyes are soulless. no bulb remains behind the bevel of their spheres.

the mechanical kingdom was different from the vast openness of the borders' wastelands. kyle then decides to take a shortcut and toss his phone up the air, only for the rotom that inhabits it to float as soon as it reaches the maximum height.

the flash function carries a mechanical click that seemingly alerts the volcanion guards of an intruder.

as kyle waits for his rotom phone to come back to him, his eyes travel to where noah points. "wait, those are familiar."

he's seen one of them before, when people have decided to band together their heatrans and make a huge pile of molten rocks for a weird project. that one was with life, opposite to what he sees in these.

something small and green leads them to their direction. it was another thing kyle has seen before, albeit on a different occasion. it flies straight to their direction, slipping between their feet and inside the clock tower.

"did it just-?" the volcanion guards follow the source of movement in front of them, unable to think for themselves. eventually, they'll find themselves facing off against them.

"guys?" he calls the rest. "we have company."

the smeargle attempts to use nature's madness from afar to deter the enemy, but even with the sygna suit, the attack barely does anything. kyle bites his lip as he contemplates if the nature of this dimension is dead or not.

a chuckle leaks through, betraying his feigned suspicion.[break][break]

his charizard leaps up into the air.[break][break]

"we'll hold them back."[break][break]

the air around them instantly heats up as charizard's Z-MOVE activates.[break][break]

charizard traps the target in a vortex of flames that BURNS and BINDS the target. this prevents them from escaping.

the same way Melody Miro's relicanth had suffered, so too will the volcanion.[break][break]

Smiles were the currency around here. When surrounded by metal and rust, even just the tiniest glimmer of the brightest could ease the rising tensions.

And so, to his lightheartedness, Penelope chuckled back, "yeah, well, that's true! I'll take this over another safety meeting any day of the week."

Her eyes found a flash of red, followed by the ensuing rumblings of an armory quickly approaching. "Actually, scratch that."

A click sounded off the materialization of her pokemon, a Pelipper. "Pelipper, blow them away!"

Pairing up with Matias' z-move, the avian's hurricane further pushed out the sweeping licks of flames, totally incinerating all that kept in their way.

seeing the NATURE'S MADNESS brush against the vanguard of volcanion, noah realizes just how inanimate and stoic this land is. the lack of green. the tough, straight edges. how the metal tings coldly beneath his sneakers. how the rust tints the taste of this stale air.[break][break]

the structures and spires around them do not stand as signs of life, but as metal cutouts of a triumphant nihilism.[break][break]

"this beats those for sure." [break][break]

noah's urshifu darts toward the north, clearing obstacles and debris. the pokemon hoists a large gear embedded into the street and tosses it toward a volcanion scout. it embeds itself into the machine's breast plate.[break][break]

"thanks guys!" noah says as the others keep the guards at bay. [break][break]

he spots a draw bridge, the mechanisms for its rise and fall missing a gear. [break][break]

"jin! the gear!"[break][break]

the urshifu grunts in response. as metal shrapnel and plating shriek, the bear rips the oversized gear out of the downed volcanion. it slots the gear in place, allowing the bridge to descend with each rickety sound of its winch for their passage toward the castle.

kyle's eyes remain on the zygarde cell, even as MATIAS SILPH and PENELOPE LIVY have fended off the threat coming their way.

urgency from the councilwoman springs noah faber into action as he immediately goes for the bridge repair. as soon as the gear slots in, the path before them opens up.

kyle dashes forward, chasing after the cell. it looked familiar, but he can't quite pin a name to it. it's when he scoops his smeargle to catch up with his pace that he remembers.

"land's wrath!"

an explosion of energy stops the cell from moving, not because it got cut off, but because of the familiarity of the move. there's a moment where it halts any movement, giving enough time for the others to join the chase.

"quick, guys!" he calls everyone to arms. "we need that little guy!" kyle doesn't give a reason why, or rather, forgets to mention it.

his hand raises out to his side as though to catch onto something fast and urgent; it lowers a few seconds later. the lack of MAGICAL LEAVES is apparent enough.[break][break]

at kyle lopez's request, matias recalls his charizard before hopping onto his dodrio, the same one he used in Josh Devlin's race. together, they chase after the ZYGARDE CELL.[break][break]

his hands weave to manipulate the earth, making it difficult terrain for the CELL as he tries to close the distance.[break][break]

While Matias was the first to act on the champion's orders, it was Penelope who made good on them. Swapping a pair of wings for a maine of fire, the councilwoman swiftly leapt on top of her Arcanine and made headway toward the bouncing fleck of green.

EXTREME SPEED carried the duo over, and with one low sweeping hand, she just barely managed to capture it.

Looping around the now dissembled terrain, she returned to the group. Heavy breaths leaked from her lips.

the grinding of rusted metal, grooved and scarred with the old language of time, distracts noah from spotting the green segment. his eyes track nothing with frantic rerouting.[break][break]

he yelps. the earth shakes and shifts underneath a lifted sneaker. finally, things settle.[break][break]

on noah's command, his urshifu scouts ahead and crosses the roil-black metal of the bridge. each paw fall is met with a tinny echo.[break][break]

"what'd we find? a pokemon?" noah's gaze flickers between kyle and matias. he leans toward the creature in the councilwoman's palm. "careful penelope. you might crush it you're so strong."[break][break]

in the distance, his urshifu bellows a noise of discomfort. not one of urgent need. just an ominous grumble that may be better swallowed.

with the efforts of MATIAS SILPH and PENELOPE LIVY, the zygarde cell is soon caught in the councilwoman's hands.

"i'unno," kyle answers nonchalantly. "it's just something we found on ultra space before. it also has the same colors as fern's green dog and maybe it evolves to that."

the explanation comes after the answer.

"noah's right. i also think it's some sort of pokemon." he shifts his attention from noah faber to the person with the cell. "better keep it in a ball though. the last time i saw it, it came from a dead person's body so i think it's parasitic."

as he walks and chucks a ball at the pokemon penny was gripping, the gears in his head start moving again much like the clockwork around them.

"actually, maybe we should head back. shouldn't we have you checked since you did handle it with bare hands?"
